“Eco-friendly” gets used a lot in packaging — here’s a plain-English comparison so you can choose with confidence.

Bagasse (sugarcane pulp). Made from the fibre left after sugar is extracted, bagasse is a renewable, commercially compostable material. It handles hot food and liquids well and feels sturdy. It’s a great fit for cafes and caterers wanting a clearly eco option without sacrificing performance.

Kraft board. Kraft is paper-based, renewable and recyclable, with a natural brown look customers associate with sustainability. It’s ideal for dry-to-moderate foods — boxes, trays, noodle boxes and snack packs.

Plastic. Modern plastic containers (including RPET, made from recycled PET) are durable, leak-resistant and reusable, which suits saucy meals and delivery. They’re often the most cost-effective per unit and can be recycled where facilities exist.

How to choose. Match the material to the food first, then weigh cost and your sustainability message. Many venues run bagasse or kraft for dine-in or eco-conscious orders and plastic where a tight seal matters most.
